Jungle Book The Next Chapter is the fourth family production written, directed and produced by Glenn Elston. It follows Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Toad’s Birthday Party and his legendary outdoor production of The Wind in the Willows.

Whilst all his productions have some songs, Jungle Book The Next Chapter is his first to fully explore story telling through music and heralds an exciting new era of family entertainment for him.

Glenn pioneered outdoor theatre in Australia, creating a summer tradition across the country. He has directed A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Twelfth Night, The Taming of the Shrew, Romeo and Juliet, Much Ado About Nothing The Musical and Richard III Unhinged. He has also been involved in producing many artists including Sir George Martin, Marianne Faithfull, David Strassman, Ross Noble, Barry Humphries, Circus Archaos and many more. REVIEWER: PETER GREEN, 3MBS RADIO
TUESDAY 30 MARCH 2010

When I go to a kids show I realise that short though this review may be, its possibly the most important I compose this year. It records one of the few productions of children’s theatre, actually good children’s theatre, around at holiday time.

If we don’t habituate our kids to live theatre now, then we may as well kiss the theatre arts goodnight.

Glenn Elston, Artistic Director of the Australian Shakespeare Company (responsible each summer for 'The Wind in the Willows' in the Botanic Gardens) has written and directed 'Jungle Book The Concert Show', playing till Sunday week at the Athenaeum Theatre, Collins Street, and I was there this morning along with hundreds of excited children and their mothers or grandmas, and I think I enjoyed the show just as much as the rest of the audience.

Using Kipling’s model, Glenn has put an older Baloo the Bear (Benedict Kazlauskas) and a grown up Mowgli (Andrew Bongiorno) and a most villainous Jackal in Callan Lewis back in the Jungle, but Baloo wants out and movie star fame, and Mowgli wants back in away from the city’s strife and Jackal just wants any left overs.

With song and projection they take us back to early days and adventure and recall some of the other characters; Shere Khan the Tiger, Bagheera the Panther, etc. The songs say it mostly, “What Sort of Animal Are You?”, “Cheeky Monkey”, “Bear Star”, “Elephant Dance” (with on-stage help from audience children), “Jungle in the City” and more.

There was great hysterical fun, on stage magic, plenty of audience participation and sing-a-long, all helped by good musical direction from Paul Norton, choreography by Sue-Ellen Shook, visual and technical direction from Tim Bright.

Do go and take the kids and grandkids – a great morning’s fun; thoroughly recommended!
